The window of
the House of the Chapter is one of the culminating points of Manuelin art in
Portugal.
If you want to visit this house which was started to be built in 1510 by Diogo
de Arruda, you must
enter fom Charola of the Convent
of Christ; it was here that the general courts, convoked by Filipe I
of Portugal, had been congregated. At that time, this dependence wasn't the House
of the Chapter but the sacristy of the church. The access to the current House
of the Chapter is made by the south window, currently transformed in door.
The Museum of the Friends of the Order of Christ Monuments Union is installed in
this building, where there is a vast collection of archaeological objects such
as sculptures, paintings, a cinquecentist sword with engraved guards
(notable), a fragment of a cinquecentist board, representing instruments of
torture, perhaps proceeding from one of the Charola’s retable
Concerning the window itself, we can shimmer representative elements of the
overseas contact, vegetalists, maritime and realistic suggestions and an evident
epic sense.
All this gigantic composition, perhaps the most fabulous architectural creation
of all times, seats on a bearded figure, almost an atlas, sculptured rudely in
the rock, but of great vigour, giving the illusion of supporting the set. Among
the several theories for the appearance of this figure, some indicate to be this
personage a self-portrait of the architect Diogo de Arruda.
